How to Regain Control When You’re Overwhelmed

Feeling Overwhelmed Running Your Business?

Running a small business can feel like being pulled in every direction at once. One minute you’re answering client emails, the next you’re dealing with a staffing issue—or trying to figure out how to make more profit. It’s exhausting, and it’s easy to feel like you’ll never catch up.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many small business owners in Edmonton and across Alberta struggle with the same thing: they’re working hard but never feel fully in control.

Why overwhelm happens

Most business owners get stuck because there’s too much going on and it’s unclear what deserves attention. Some common patterns I see:

  • Chasing “urgent” tasks instead of focusing on what drives growth
  • Spreading yourself too thin across clients or projects
  • Not having a clear system to prioritize and make decisions

Without a framework to organize your time and energy, overwhelm takes over—and it’s hard to know where to start fixing it.

A simple framework to regain control

Here’s a framework I teach my clients that works for small business owners in Edmonton, Calgary, and beyond:

  1. List everything on your plate
Write down all tasks, projects, and challenges—big and small. Getting them out of your head helps reduce stress.
  2. Identify what matters most
Ask: Which tasks actually move your business forward? Which ones are just keeping you busy?
  3. Prioritize and schedule
Focus on the high-impact items first. Use time-blocking or daily priorities to stay on track.
  4. Delegate or eliminate low-value tasks
Not everything needs your personal attention. Hand off tasks or cut the ones that don’t create results.
  5. Review and adjust weekly
Spend 15 minutes each week reviewing your priorities, progress, and what needs to shift.

Even applying this framework to just one area of your business can reduce overwhelm and give you clarity.

Next steps

It can be hard to know which problem is causing the most stress—or which area to tackle first. If you’re too deep in the overwhelm, asking for guidance isn’t a weakness. That’s why I work with business owners: to take a step back, see the big picture, and give practical tools to regain control.
