BONUS: The Origin of Owner’s Roundtable (And Where It’s Headed Next Season)

Jeff steps away from the host chair this week to talk about why he started the podcast, and what’s ahead when it returns in September.

He talks about the peer group of business owners that inspired the show, and why sitting across from someone who understands the weight of ownership taught him some important lessons in his own journey.

Looking ahead, learn how the show’s lens is widening. Alongside more owner conversations, expect deep dives with subject matter experts on topics like marketing, leadership, cash flow, and mental health.

Thanks to this season’s guests for trusting us with their stories, and to everyone listening for making this season worth doing. Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you in September.

Ever wonder what it really takes to build a business from the ground up? Welcome to Owner’s Roundtable, where successful business owners pull up a chair and swap stories and lessons from their own adventures in business. From surviving their first half-baked business plan, the time they almost went broke, the time they got lucky, and the strategies and tactics they used along the way. This isn’t about a polished success story on the Company About Us page, it’s about the real story behind the business. The pain, the people, the setbacks, and the big break that changed everything.

Each episode, you’ll sit down with the owners who’ve been in the trenches, built something meaningful and lived to tell the tale. Whether you’re starting out, scaling up, or just curious what it takes to go the distance, there’s a seat at the Owner’s Roundtable for you. Subscribe now on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. I’m Jeff McClarty, seasoned entrepreneur, executive coach, and business trainer, and I want you to have your own seat with us here at the Owner’s Roundtable. Real owners, real stories, real insights.

Hey, it’s Jeff McClarty and welcome back to Owner’s Roundtable. We’re taking a summer break and trading in the owner’s roundtable for the patio table with friends and family until we get back after it in September.

I know for some entrepreneurs this is the busiest time of the year, and for others it’s the slowest. So whether you’re going into vacation mode yourself or looking forward to a winter break after a busy summer, I hope all the work you put into your business gives you the time to relax and reflect on your successes and lessons learned and enjoy life with your friends and family as we move into the third and fourth quarters of the upcoming year.

But before I wrap this up, I wanted to share with you a little bit about why I decided to create the owner’s roundtable and where I’m hoping to go with it in the future.

When I was a lot younger in my business career, I had the benefit of weekly gab session with a number of business owners that ranged in size from one or two person shops to guys that ran large organizations, car dealerships, and multi-business segments. And the thing I learned the most from was the conversations they had about what was challenging in business and what they struggled with, as well one of the main conversation often was just that camaraderie of talking with other business owners who had that level of responsibility for signing other people’s paychecks, for being the one that was responsible at the very end of the day. And that is what I learned the most from in business and really affected how I was able to build and grow my own businesses.

And my hope for Owners Roundtable is to facilitate those kind of conversations for people who may not have that peer group that they’re able to connect with or to understand that even though they’re in business for themselves, they’re not by themselves in that there are other people also experiencing the challenges of entrepreneurship that are interested in solving problems and building something bigger than themselves and building out a team and an organization that can do amazing things in the future.

That’s why we’d originally started the Owner’s Roundtable around the idea of owners’ conversations about everybody’s individual experience in owning a company and how they grew and what the challenges they faced were. That’s still going to be the core of the podcast. But one of the things I’d really like to see going forward is we identified a topic that’s of interest to owners, maybe in marketing, leadership, cash flow, mental health. Anything that really speaks to the needs and unique challenges that entrepreneurs face.

Hoping to broaden out our guest list a little bit and bring in some of those experts to discuss specific aspects that are relevant to building out a business and the ownership experience. We’d love to hear some feedback. If there’s a topic you’d love to see explored, by all means reach out to us either through the podcast or through my website, focalpointedmonton.com. Let’s start the conversation.

So with that, I hope you enjoy your summer. Take some time for yourself and your family and your team. And when September rolls around, come find us again and we’ll have a lot more to talk about. Until then, this is Jeff McClarty signing off from Owners Roundtable. Take care of yourselves have a great summer.
